  • How will my student benefit from HOBY NH?
In addition to learning responsible and effective leadership skills, students are connected with a global network of over 500,000 HOBY alumni, including alumni from every state seminar in the US and multiple international seminars in Canada and the United Kingdom. Because of our global presence and known commitment to service, HOBY is an excellent resumé component to include in college and employment applications.
  • Who runs HOBY NH?
HOBY NH is organized and operated entirely by a dedicated group of volunteers, all of whom are HOBY NH alumni themselves. In partnership with our parent organization, HOBY International, we meet year-round to plan our flagship seminar event as well as one-day Community Leadership Workshop (CLeW) events for freshmen. For more information about our Corporate Board and Planning Team, visit our About Us section.
  • What does HOBY NH teach?
The HOBY curriculum focuses on three phases of leadership: personal leadership, group leadership, and societal leadership. Ambassadors will learn how to develop their own unique leadership style, how they can better work together in groups, and how their leadership skills can make a positive impact on their local community and broader global community.
  • What is the L4S Challenge?
At the end of our seminar, we challenge students to complete 100 hours of volunteer service for the betterment of their community. We also give them a little head start – 4 hours of service from planting in the NH Food Bank Production Garden! To date, HOBY Alumni have logged over 5 million hours as part of the L4S Challenge.
  • Are students expected to stay for the entire weekend?
Yes, students are expected to stay for the entire duration of the HOBY seminar. Please check your calendar to be aware of any potential conflicts such as athletic meets or family events before submitting an application.
  • How much does it cost to attend a HOBY NH seminar?
Our registration fee is $350 if registered before February 1st. This fee accounts for housing, food, transportation while at seminar, and other expenses.
  • Are there scholarships for students to attend HOBY NH?
Students have previously had great success in having registration fees paid for by local Rotary, Kiwanis, Key, and Lions Clubs. We also offer a very limited number of scholarships on a discretionary basis. Please reach out to Director of Recruitment and Ambassador Relations Tessa Baillargeon (baillargeont@nhhoby.org) for more information.
  • How can I contact my student while they attend the seminar?
Students are allowed to bring phones during the seminar and will be allowed to use them during scheduled breaks and for activities involving online forms. However, we ask that during instruction and group time, phones are put away. If you are unable to contact your student, you can call our HOBY NH hotline (57 - 37 - HOBYNH) or 573-746-2964 to be connected with a senior leadership member.
  • Will my student’s dietary restrictions be accommodated at seminar?
We work closely with the culinary staff at St. Anselm to accommodate any dietary restrictions. This includes vegan, gluten free, lactose free, Kosher, Halal, food allergens, and many more! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Director of Recruitment and Ambassador Relations Tessa Baillargeon (baillargeont@nhhoby.org).
  • Will there be time to study while at seminar?
Students are given some free time at the end of each day to socialize and/or study. There are study rooms in the Living Learning Commons that students can use. However, we enforce a curfew of 10:30PM each day to ensure that all students get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep.
  • Why is the HOBY NH seminar at the end of the year?
HOBY’s founder, Hugh O’Brian, believed that the perfect time to improve leadership skills was after the sophomore year of high school – that way, students will have completed two years of high school and have two more years to use their leadership skills.
